A guide to

buying a handpan

Purchasing a handpan is an exciting step, and choosing the right one makes all the difference in your playing journey.

If you’re just starting out, a $300 Amazon handpan can be used for practice and returned within 30 days, but the sound quality is limited. True handpans typically range from $1,500–$3,000+, with high-end instruments reaching $5,000–$7,000.

What to look for when buying a handpan:

  • Number of Notes: Most handpans have between 8–11 notes. Fewer notes can make the instrument easier for beginners, while more notes expand your range and possibilities for improvisation.

  • Scales: Each handpan is tuned to a single scale, which gives it its unique “mood.” Popular scales include:

    • Minor / Celtic Minor – mysterious, emotional, and versatile.

    • Dorian – meditative and contemplative.

    • Harmonic Minor / Phrygian – dramatic, intense, with Middle Eastern influence.

    • Mixolydian / Major – uplifting, joyful, and bright.
Choosing a scale is about finding one that resonates emotionally and musically with you.

  • Metal Quality: The best handpans are made from carefully shaped and treated steel. Professional makers use nitrided or stainless steel, which affects tone, sustain, and resistance to rust. Cheaper models often lack consistency in tuning and resonance.

Why we recommend Sew Handpans:
Here in Miami, we carry a limited stock of Sew Handpans from Italy (Opera Series), priced around $1,900–$2,500. These instruments are beautifully crafted with rich, balanced tones and come in some of the most sought-after scales. Being able to try them in person before buying is a huge advantage.

Other great options exist—like Yishama, Saraz, Axciom, Ayasa—but Sew Handpans provide excellent value in terms of price and quality and available right here in Miami.
